The suffix "-se" on Dutch middle or sur names - The Dutch used the surname convention of the father's first name with the suffix "-se". (Hermen's son, Jan, would be Jan Hermense and Jan's son's surname would be Janse). When they came to the United States, a lot of them adopted their own family names that would be used by all future generations and just used the Dutch father's names as middle names. For example, Van Kleeck was chosen by Barent Baltus' son, Baltus Barentse Van Kleeck and became the family name still in use today.
